Anatomy of the shoulder- Muscles

I looked at the muscles that move the shoulder and the action that that muscle has on the shoulder.

Anterior shoulder

         Serratus anterior

o       Abducts (and protracts) scapula and upwardly rotates it while abducting the arm; stabilises scapula while holding it to the chest wall

         Pectoralis minor

o       Draws scapula forward and downward (also elevates rib is origin and insertion are reversed)

Posterior shoulder

         Levator scapulae

o       Elevates medial border of scapula while downwardly rotating lateral angle; helps trapezius and rhomboid muscle pull scapula upward and medially; bends neck laterally

         Trapezius

o       Upper fibres: elevate and upwardly rotate scapula; extend neck

o       Middle fibres: adduct (and retract) scapula

o       Lower fibres: depress and help upper fibres upwardly rotate scapula

         Rhomboideus major

o       Adducts (and retracts) and elevates the medial border of scapula while it downwardly rotates the lateral angle

         Rhomboideus minor

o       Adducts (and retracts) and elevates the medial border of the scapula while it downwardly rotates the lateral angle
