Family Involvement in cadavers

Though out the world the involvement varies (due to restrictions of the law). Within Australia itself each state has defined its own laws. I have outlined the general involvement of the family in cadaver donation (in Australia).

– In the absence of signed and witnessed consent (from a patient that is fully informed and has the capacity to consent) family are able to donate the body on the patients behalf.

– The “family” refers specifically to the most senior next of kin.

– The consent confirms that no other immediate family members have any objection to the donation

– it is the duty of the next-of-kin signing to ensure that no immediate family object to the donation

– NB Most often universities enforce that they cannot be held liable for any false or misleading consent
